UCM’s Virtual-Festival of Champions will be a free event for all directors and their students. The event will provide both a competitive and non-competitive circuit for field shows, indoor percussion, and/or indoor guard.

How does my band participate?
Once a director is registered for the event, a link to upload a video for each event they wish to have adjudicated will be provided. The video may be taken with a simple smartphone or advanced-level video equipment of your choice and can be recorded from your rehearsal tower or from a Friday evening performance in your home stadium. If you have access to the Goodyear blimp, that would be cool as well!

Videos will be due in early October, with the awards ceremony slated for Saturday, October 17 (our original festival date).

Competitive & non-competitive captions
We understand that the submission of videos may create an unfair inequality between groups, therefore we are giving directors an opportunity to select either a competitive or non-competitive circuit for adjudication. A director can enter their group as competitive or non-competitive for a field show performance, indoor percussion performance, and/or indoor guard performance. Not all groups from the same school need to be the same circuit for each group. For instance:

- ABC High School is entering its field show performance and separate indoor guard performance as competitive for both;
- XYZ High School is entering their field show performance as non-competitive but their indoor guard and indoor percussion performances will enter as competitive.

All performances will be adjudicated by a panel of adjudicators from around the country. This panel will provide feedback and a score, much like our live event. All assessments/comments will be forwarded to the director at the conclusion of the event.

Awards show & something special for your seniors
An awards show will be live-streamed with the link made available to the director to disseminate to their students and families.
For those bands/performances that select to participate in the non-competitive circuit, we will present the ratings during the awards show. For those participating in the competitive circuit, a ranking will be announced at the end of our live-streamed show, much like the Finals competition during our live event.

We anticipate this live-streamed production to be around 45 minutes in length and be similar to the NFL Draft show highlighting:

- A special recognition of all band seniors in the participating bands;
- A top-10 best moments set of clips;
- A pre-recorded performance by the UCM Marching Band and possibly Marching Percussion;
Presentation of awards.

In addition, the directors will receive:
- A copy of the live-stream video awards show, which they can forward to their students;
- Feedback from the adjudicators;
- Competitive-circuit awards sent via USPS;
- A special participation award for all bands.

When you submit your video(s) for adjudication, you will also have the ability to submit a special tribute for your band seniors! We request that you either submit one group photo (with names to be credited on screen) or individual photos with accompanying names. While this is an optional request, we hope that providing this gives those students and their family a small chance to smile during these trying times.

Cost
We have all been through enough turmoil this year and know that many of you and your school district are facing unprecedented budget cuts because of the pandemic. With so many high school seniors losing what may be their final opportunity to have a meaningful marching band experience, UCM will bear the entire cost of this event. Your cost to participate is $0.

How can you run an event and be upside down with costs vs. income?
Quite frankly, we cannot. We are seeking corporate sponsorships to assist us with the costs involved. We use the annual Festival of Champions to raise money for our scholarship fund and are hoping that we can raise funds to continue supplying our students with that form of financial aid.

My staff and I are seeing a large number of directors posting on social media about their disappointment of the situation (due to meaningful events being cancelled, thus cancelling their students’ experiences in those areas). We felt it was our responsibility to offer the best possible experience to you and your students so we have something to work towards, versus have all external experiences taken away. It is our honor to provide you with this alternative experience.

How do we register?
Directors must register for the event by scanning the QR code in the attached flyer or by clicking this link: https://forms.gle/dcaGymFtfphqHuwn7

Because of the workload expected to make this a high-quality event for you and your students, we anticipate limiting registration to the first 50 responses.

I hope you and your students will join us for this special event. The Band Staff at UCM looks forward to serving you, your students, and our profession during this pandemic and beyond. Best of luck to you and please be safe.
