Join us for StarFest on Saturday, September 29th.

It’s a super family event with tons of entertainment going on. Gate prices are only $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for students.

StarFest is a premier marching band festival put on by Sioux City North High School Band and takes place annually on the last Saturday of September in Elwood Olsen stadium on the campus of Morningside College.

Area high schools compete or march in exhibition for judge scoring and trophies. Competing bands are judged in the Preliminary round to earn a spot in the Finals round. There are full concessions available during the event.

Judging Panel

Tri-State Band Judges Association has provided quality judging throughout the Midwest for the past 28 years. This year Tri-State has provided panels for over 40 parades and field show competitions. Tri-State draws from a pool of 30 qualified judges who have been or are presently band directors or specialists in the marching band area.

Prelim Judges

Bob Goheen, Brandon, SD- -Music Execution
Bob Goheen served as director of bands at Brandon Valley High School in Brandon, SD for 28 years. Under his direction the concert bands, jazz bands, and marching band consistently received awards and superior ratings at music competitions in South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. Since retiring in 2010 he has been active as a clinician and adjudicator, working with elementary, middle school, and high school students throughout the tri-state area.

Jeff Goldsmith, New Brighton, MN- -Marching and Maneuvering Execution
Jeff is a former music educator of 15 years who remains active in the Twin Cities music community as a performer, clinician, and adjudicator. He has established a successful career in group travel planning with both instrumental and vocal music ensembles.

Ted Reicher, Davenport, IA- -Music General Effect
Ted has been writing and teaching music and drill for competitive bands, drum corps, and winter guards for 26 years. He is an active composer and arranger and maintains a private brass studio for students in the Iowa/Illinois Quad Cities area.

Steve Citta, Cedar Falls, IA- -Marching and Maneuvering General Effect
Steve is a professional musician, music arranger, and drill writer. In addition to teaching instrumental music, he currently serves as a marching, jazz, and concert band adjudicator/clinician throughout the Midwest.

Barry Peterson, Eagan, MN- -Percussion
Barry is in his 24th year of teaching instrumental music. He presently teaches at Black Hawk Middle School in Eagan, MN and at Eastview High School in Apple Valley, MN. He continues to be in demand as a clinician, performer, adjudicator, and composer/arranger in the field of percussion.

Mary Goheen, Brandon, SD- -Auxiliary
Mary served as the color guard instructor at Luverne High School in Luverne, MN for 24 years. Her Luverne guard earned a reputation for excellence and was recognized for their creativity, precision, and innovation. Having retired from her instrumental position at Luverne in 2011, she remains active as an adjudicator throughout the Midwest.

Finals Judges

Dave Gudmastad, Winona, MN- -Music Execution
Dave directed the Winona Cotter High School band program for 25 years. Named Minnesota Music Educator of the Year in 2007, his bands had a history of excellence in all areas. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Music Educators Association and on the Music Advisory Council for the Minnesota State High School League.

Her Luverne color guard earned a reputation for excellence and was recognized for their creativity, precision, and innovation. Having retired from her instrumental teaching position in Luverne in 2011, she remains active as an adjudicator throughout the Midwest.

Richard Dufault, Waseca, MN- -Marching and Maneuvering General Effect
Richard was a band director in Minnesota for 30 years. His Waseca bands were noted for their excellence in all areas of instrumental music. He co-founded the Waseca Marching Classic and is sought after as a judge, clinician, and All-State adjudicator.

Steve Lyons, Champlin Park, MN- -Percussion
Steve is in his 21st year of teaching band at Champlin Park High School in Champlin, MN where he directs all the bands and teaches percussion studio classes. He is in high demand as a clinician, performer, and arranger.

Andy Schmidt, Hugo, MN- -Auxiliary
Andy has been a middle school band director in the Mounds View school district in Minnesota for 12 years. He has served as guest clinician or instructor for many award-winning marching bands, drum corps, color guards, and drumlines in MN, ND, and WI. Additionally, he is an active judge for field shows, parades, winter color guard and winter drumline competitions throughout the upper Midwest.
