While continuing to offer
the ultimate in innovation for marching band

annual “Bands Across the Prairie” Marching Invitational
will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014, from 10:00 AM
– 3:00 PM, on the beautiful campus of Prairie High
School, with a new stadium “field turf” surface and
additional stadium seating!
This format for “Bands Across the Prairie” will also
permit bands to compete later the same evening in the
annual “5-Seasons Marching Band Invitational” hosted by
the C.R. Community School District, held just 5 miles
away at Kingston Stadium!

Categories of Adjudication
Music – General Effect: MR. PAUL BRIZZI
Mr. Brizzi completed both his B.A. and M.A. at the
University of Northern Iowa. He taught in Iowa high
schools for thirty-five years, recently retiring as
Director of Bands at Ankeny High School. He served as
interim Symphonic Band and Marching Band Director at the
University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in 2006-07,
and has taught at Iowa State University. He currently
teaches instrumental education classes at Drake
University. Mr. Brizzi is a past-president of the Iowa
Bandmasters Association and has served on the Board of
Directors of the National Band Association.
Music – Execution: MR. KYLE ENGELHARDT
Mr. Engelhardt is currently in his 15th year of teaching
instrumental music, spending the last ten years in the
Cedar Falls High School band program. He directs the
Symphonic Band, Jazz I, and co-directs the marching band
and pep bands. Ensembles under his direction have been
consistent Division I award recipients, earning top
accolades at various local and state performances in
Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, and California. In
addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Engelhardt enjoys
staying active as a performer, adjudicator, and
clinician throughout the state of Iowa.
Marching & Maneuvering – General Effect: MR. STEVE
CITTA
Following his retirement after 20 years as Director of
Bands at Waterloo West High School, Mr. Steve Citta
recently returned to teaching and is now serving as the
Director of Bands at Bunger Middle School in Waterloo,
Iowa. Mr. Citta is a music educator, a professional
musician, arranger and drill writer. He is in demand as
a marching, jazz and concert band adjudicator and
clinician throughout the Midwest. Mr. Citta earned his
Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University
of Northern Iowa and has graduate hours from Illinois
State University, Iowa State University and the
University of Northern Iowa.
Marching and Maneuvering - Execution: MR. TONY
GARMOE
Mr. Garmoe has been as a music educator in both Iowa and
Illinois during the past 33 years, including twelve
years as Director of Bands at Valley High School in West
Des Moines. He received his Bachelors degree from Truman
State University and his Masters degree in conducting
from the University of Iowa. Ensembles under Mr.
Garmoe’s direction have performed at the Iowa
Bandmasters Association Conference, the Illinois Music
Educators Conference, and at the prestigious Midwest
Band and Orchestra Clinic held in Chicago, Illinois.
Percussion: MR. MICHAEL DAVIES
Mr. Davies has taught at Cedar Rapids Prairie Point
Middle School and Ninth Grade Academy since 2001, where
he directs the Eighth Grade Concert Band, Seventh Grade
Jazz Band, and teaches a variety of lessons for grades
7-9. A native of Indianola, Iowa, Mr. Davies is a 2001
graduate of the University of Iowa. He is in demand
throughout the state as a percussion arranger,
clinician, and adjudicator, in addition to serving as
Guest Conductor for numerous area honor bands.
Color Guard: MS. AMY HUNZELMAN
Ms. Hunzelman is the Color Guard Instructor for the
University of Northern Iowa’s Panther Marching Band. She
holds a B.M. and B.A. from the University of Iowa, and
an M.A. from the University of Northern Iowa. Amy has
over 20 years of color guard coaching experience in both
Iowa and Illinois, in addition to performing with Brass
Theatre (now known as the Broadway hit “Blast!”). Amy is
the Director of Education and Special Programs for the
Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at UNI.
Clinician: MR. ALAN FEIRER
Mr. Feirer is a professional leadership trainer and
consultant. For the last 16 years, he has led the
business “Group Dynamic” and served bands, choirs, and
other clients to maximize the potential of their groups
through leadership training and team-building. Mr.
Feirer spent 19 years as a music educator, the final
eleven years as Director of Bands at Winterset High
School. Bands and students under his direction have
received numerous honors, invitations, and distinguished
ratings. Mr. Feirer completed his undergraduate degree
at Wartburg College, and earned his Masters degree from
the University of Northern Iowa in 2003.
Clinician: MR. KENT KEATING
Mr. Keating is the head director of vocal music at
Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, where he
instructs and assists many vocal ensembles, including
the award-winning Westside Delegation and Meistersinger
choirs. Previously, he taught vocal music at City High
School in Iowa City, and instrumental music at
Washington High School in Washington, Iowa. During his
tenure at Washington High School, his marching and jazz
ensembles placed 1st – 3rd in nearly every contest
entered. He has taught for a total of thirty-two years
in both instrumental and vocal music, in addition to
writing and arranging for high school and college
marching bands and show choirs throughout the Midwest.
Clinician: MR. DAVE NEWPORT
Mr. Newport has 33 years of teaching experience, serving
as Director of Bands at Grinnell High School for 20
years, and additional experience in three other teaching
positions in the state of Iowa. He is a frequent guest
conductor for various area honor bands. Mr. Newport
received his B.A. and Masters degree from the University
of Northern Iowa, as well as the Outstanding Iowa
Teacher Award from Grinnell College in 1999. |
