29th Annual Event held on the campus of Rosemount HS in the southern suburbs of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Ron Hardin – Waikoloa, HI
Ron Hardin has designed hundreds of shows for bands, drum lines, winter guards and drum corps. He is in demand as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the world, having done many clinics throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Since 1999, Ron has served as a visual judge for Winter Guard International, annually adjudicating for many circuits, regionals and world championships. Ron has produced several instructional videos, and has appeared in WGI’s “Meet the Judge” series. His designs have appeared in several BOA regional finals, won numerous state championships, circuit contests and have won three WGI Percussion Gold Medals. As an instructor, Ron has been a part of teams earning six DCI World Championships and eight High Visual Awards, including the 2012 & 2013 John Brazale Best Visual Award. Ron’s experience in the drum corps activity spans over twenty years, as a performer, instructor, and caption head, including his current position as Visual Caption Head of the World Champion Carolina Crown, where he has served since 2011. Ron Hardin is currently the director of Bands at Papillion-La Vista South H.S., and was previously the director of Bands at Bellevue East H.S., and at Clayton Valley H.S. in Concord, CA. He was the recipient of the Jack R. Snyder Young Band Director Award and served two terms as the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association Marching Band Chair. When he is not teaching or conducting, Ron finds time to play bass trombone with several ensembles.
Brett Johnson – The Woodlands, TX
Mr. Brett Johnson taught for 28 years at Leesville, Louisiana High School, Robert E. Lee High School in Tyler, Texas, and The Woodlands High School in The Woodlands, Texas. During his 18-year tenure at The Woodlands, the marching band was a consecutive 25-time finalist at Bands of America Regional Marching Band Championships, a two-time Texas State Marching Band Contest Finalist, and a four-time Bands of America Grand National Finalist, winning the AAA National Championship in 2006. In 2010 the Woodlands Band was one of three bands worldwide to earn the coveted Sudler Shield award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation for excellence in marching band. During Mr. Johnson’s tenure, The Woodlands Wind Ensemble performed at such prestigious events as the Texas State Wind Ensemble Contest, the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, the National Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall, and The Midwest Clinic in Chicago. The Woodlands Band is also a proud recipient of The Sudler Flag from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. In 2004 the Texas Bandmasters Association honored Mr. Johnson with the Lifetime Meritorious Achievement Award. Mr. Johnson is an active adjudicator and clinician throughout the United States. He and his wife, Cynthia, live in The Woodlands and have two sons, Jacob and Kevin. Mr. Johnson retired from teaching in January, 2010 and is currently employed by M&H Energy Services in Houston, Texas.
Chad Quamme – Greendale, WI
Chad Quamme has been an active instructor in drum corps, marching band and winter guard over the last twenty years. Through his years of teaching he has worked with finalist groups in Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International as well as many marching bands in Wisconsin and Michigan. Currently he designs for marching bands and winter guards in Wisconsin, Michigan and Texas and adjudicates all over the country. He is a history teacher at Beloit Memorial High School in Beloit, Wisconsin and resides in Greenfield, Wisconsin.
Ben Helmrick – Oconomowac, WI
Ben Helmrick attended the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and graduated in the fall of 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. He currently teaches band at Silver Lake Intermediate School in Oconomowoc, WI, and continues to work with several marching programs in the state. Ben has enjoyed being on staff with the River City Rhythm Drum & Bugle Corps and will begin his four year teaching brass in the role of Brass Caption Head. He marched with the Madison Scouts during the summers of 2013 and 2014 on Euphonium and Trombone.
Lane Powell – Harmony, MN
Lane M. Powell is the New Business Development Manager at Harmony Enterprises, a global environmental solutions company based in Harmony, MN. Lane is a 1994 graduate from the University of Iowa, (BM in Music Education and Trumpet Performance) and taught instrumental music in the public schools of Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota for twenty-two years. Bands under his direction consistently earned Superior Ratings in marching band, concert band, jazz band, and small ensembles. In addition, his bands earned many regional and national awards, including multiple performances at the Iowa Bandmasters Association Convention and the Minnesota Music Educator’s Mid-Winter Clinic. Lane’s professional affiliations include Phi Beta Kappa, MENC, MMEA, Phi Beta Mu and Iota Kappa Lambda. In 2002, he was awarded the NEIBA Award for Excellence in Teaching at the High School level. In 2003, he received the State of Iowa Governor’s award for teaching excellence and has won the McKnight Award for composition both in 2012 and 2016. He and his wife operate the Tri-State Judging Association. He is an active adjudicator, performer, clinician, composer, and conductor. He has publications for concert band under the C.L. Barnhouse and Powell Music labels. Lane has served on the Board of Directors for both the Minnesota State High School League and the Minnesota Music Educators Association.
Matt Ferry – Minneapolis, MN
Matt Ferry is an Anoka, MN native who received his BA in Music Education from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2005. Matt has been active in the marching arts since he began performing with the front ensembles at the Blue Stars (1998) and The Cavaliers (1999-2002). He has been on the leadership and design teams for WGI, BOA and DCA finalist ensembles for over 15 years. Matt is an active adjudicator, arranger and educational consultant for bands, drum corps and indoor percussion. Most recently, Matt took a three-year hiatus from Minnesota winters and moved to Texas where he worked with the front ensembles at Dripping Springs High School, Claudia Taylor Johnson High School and was a founding designer/coordinator of 5points Percussion from San Antonio. He currently works for Edmentum Inc. from his home office in St. Paul, MN, where he supports digital learning outcomes for more than 350 school systems in New England and New Jersey. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Invictus World Color Guard of Austin, Texas, where he assists with operations and corporate partnerships. Matt Ferry has been an Innovative Percussion Artist since 2003.
